Baggins Original Hi Tops Ornamental Blackwork was designed using a blackwork print by Esias van Hulsen in 1617, called Blackwork Print with Animals. The “blackwork” technique is an early form of printing on paper made from recycled linen, using lampblack or soot mixed with oil. The artist used a modified version of an enameling process called champlevé. The artist would file voids in a copper printing plate, then fill it with ink and press it to the page. The designs were often intricate patterns or lacy motifs, reflecting the process’ roots in jewelry making. We are obsessed with printing in its many forms over the ages and were inspired to repurpose this beautiful design to wear on classic white Hi Tops.
Each shoe is made to order with love by a member of our trusty staff, using a patented process at our print shop. Because they are made custom to order, please allow for minor imperfections with inking and layout.
